Notes in my Jacket - July 9, 2014

Hi Guys! I don’t have much to write about this week... at least not as much as last week!

Lets see... How was your 4th of July!? The Hermanas in my district had us all wear red, white and blue. And the workers in el comedor made us pulled pork sandwiches, corn on the cob, french fries and apple pie with vanilla ice cream... as American as it gets! They decorated the comedor y asked us to sing The Star Spangled Banner. Then, all of the cooks pulled out their phones and started to film us! haha! It was SO nice of them to do all of that for us. All of the elders chanted "USA" throughout the day. I felt so bad and wanted to start a "MEXICO" chant.

Later that night I was waiting for Hermana Tolman in the bathroom (haha - another baño story - sorry) and I put my hands in my jacket pockets. I felt some paper in there so I pulled it out to throw it away, As I was walking to the trash can I realized that they were notes. Here is what they said...

Hola Hermana Mangum
"You remind me of one of my best friends from High School and she’s super awesome."
"I wish I knew you in college, you are the coolest."
"Did you have a personal secretary to schedule your dates for you? You probably had guys lining up to go on dates with you. "

I showed Hermana Tolman and we were a little freaked out because I had not taken my jackets off all day! We ran back to the classroom and compared handwriting with the elders in our district. We discovered the writer of the notes... Elder (I will save him the embarrassment of identifying him). #detectiveskills I went right up to him and asked if it was him and he said that he snuck them into my pocket during our lesson! I am pretty sure it was a joke because he is a goofball during class! haha

Our classes during the week were great! I feel like the lessons with our investigators have improved 10 fold (although we still have so far to go)! Just when I felt like I could understand everything being said... our teachers started to talk at a normal speed! haha! I am more confident when I speak now, but it takes me FOREVER to translate what I am trying to say, and when I do... I sound like a 2 year old!

Fast Sunday was great! We got a new district in our branch and they are in the intermediate class. They all bore their testimonies and did phenomenal. It was really hard not to compare myself to them because I have been here 2 weeks longer. But, they have also studied español their entire lives! I just need to keep in mind that it will come in the Lords time and realize that I am improving and be grateful!

Sunday night we got to watch the Restoration. I loved it! I remember when I was having one of my interviews with President Alexander that he told me the most important testimony for a missionary to have is of Joseph Smith. Yo sé que José Smith es un profeta de Dios. Yo sé que a través del poder de Dios, José Smith tradujo el Libro de Mormon. (p.s. My seminary teacher plays Hyrum in that movie btw!)

I also learned something else this week that I found SO interesting! As soon as someone gains a testimony of the Book Of Mormon they gain a testimony of everything else. Think about it... If the Book of Mormon is true then Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. If Joseph Smith is a prophet of God, then his teachings come form God, por ejemplo, The word of Wisdom. I had never thought of it that way before.

I am half way done at the CCM! Wow! It has gone by quick! I LOVE it here but I must say, I cannot wait to head to Baltimore! Even though my spanish sounds like a newborn babes, I want to get going! But, I know I have a lot of improvement to do before I am ready to represent the Lord in Maryland.

The other day in class we were reading Ether 12:27, which talks about making "weak things become strong unto them". But, this time while reading it this part stuck out to me... "and if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness" I loved this line! I am grateful that here at the CCM I have seem my weaknesses, because although at times it gets me down on myself, it is going to make me a better missionary!

I cant tell you how much I miss you! But I am not homesick, I just wish you guys could be experiencing this with me! I hope everything is going well at home and in Colorado!!!

Hermana Mangum

p.s. HErmana Tolman and I realized last night that we bought fabric softener instead of laundry detergent! So, we have been "softening" our clothes for the past 2 weeks! Oops! haha!

p.s.s. My jaw had been locked in place for about 4 days now. I cannot really open my mouth very big. My branch president is a doctor so we asked him about it. He thinks I have TMJ... which just means that the joint is inflammed which is making it stuck in place. Kinda like arthritis in my jaw. I am taking Ibuprofen 3 times a day for about 2 weeks and the hopefully we will see a difference :) But for now, I am just shoveling my food into my tiny mouth and getting it all over my face! You should see me try to eat a banana! It is hecka funny! hahaha!
