I Survived Week One And It Was Great - June 25, 2014

HOLA MI FAMILIA!!!!

I had such a great/stressful week! I will start off by telling you about my companion! Hermana Tolman is great! We have had so much fun together! She is about 5 "3"... so I look like a giant! haha! She is a gymnast and is going to teach me how to do a cartwheel! She is very loud, even louder than me! haha!

Hermana Powell and Hermana Ahlstrom are the other girls in our district! We have had a blast together! They are all so funny and we get along great!

So, here are some of the highlights from my week:

Tuesday night I went to bed with my hair wet and woke up looking like a monster. I tried to make myself look normal, but it was basically impossible! Then we had a lesson with Hermana Pratt (the mission presidents wife) about how we always need to look our best and be representatives of the Lord. I could see her eyeing me the entire time... haha!

On our second full day here we had to teach an investigator all in Spanish! Hermana Tolman and I were so nervous. We planned a lesson about Joseph Smith, but when we got in there, we had no idea what to say. When we walked out, I was crushed. We did not say a thing about Joseph Smith and basically just stared at Issac, our investigator, the entire lesson.

Our second lesson went A LOT better! I was able to understand almost everything that he said! I cannot make a sentence for the life of me though! So, I can understand what is being said but I cannot respond :( I have really been frustrated because I already want to be fluent! I also have been frustrated because I feel so confident in answering him in English! I have so many great thoughts, but I can’t say them.

Funny story... On Friday night I was taking off my name tag when I thought it looked a little funny! Then I realized... my name was spelled wrong! hahahahahaha! For 2 days I had been walking around as Hermana Magnum!

We have gym time everyday and we have been playing volleyball! I was so excited when I saw the court! But, NO ONE CAN PLAY! There is never a rally and you aren’t allowed to keep score! haha! So, Hermana Tolman and I have just been volleying outside!

On monday we were on the computers doing our language study when all of the sudden we heard some screaming. We all took off our headphones and realized that it was all of the people in Mexico City screaming about the world cup! It went on for about an hour! We would be sitting in class and then we would hear Mexico City all scream in unison! haha!!

Also, the rain here is crazy! Just like hannah said! The other day there was a huge strike of lightening followed by the LOUDEST thunder I have ever heard! It was so loud that is set off all of the teachers car alarms!!! Our shoes were soaked the other night!!!

Also, I have discovered that I LOVE mangos! The food here is super good! I have a plate of cantaloupe for almost every meal!

Sunday was one of the best days I have ever had! I felt like I had been run over by a spiritual train and smashed by a Holy Ghost semi! In sacrament meeting, they randomly call on people to give talks that you have prepared earlier in the week. I was called on. I am sure no one understood one thing I said but I did it! After church, we had interviews with our branch president. He told me that he had called on me because I have a confidence about me and he knew that it wouldn’t break me down having to speak on my first week. Me... CONFIDENT!?! I can already see the Lord strengthening my weaknesses!

President Gill is such an amazing man! I am so grateful that he is my branch president and that I get to know him and his wife!

We had a devotional and Richard G. Scott talked about prayer and gave us an apostolic blessing! I could not wait to email you about it mom!!! haha! He blessed us that we will be able to learn the language and that we can have peace! Just what I needed to hear! Later Sunday night we got to watch the testaments! It was so fun!

I am grateful to be a missionary! I know that if I have complete faith in the Lord that he will bless me when I am homesick and help me learn the language! I have already seen myself grow... and it has only been one week! haha! I am more confident in myself and I am willing to say what is on my mind. I am having such a fun time and making so many friends!

I only have an hour and this email is all over the place, I am sorry!

I have so many other amazing experiences I wish I could tell you about! I guess I will just have to read you my journal when I get home!

I love you to the moon and back!

Miss you!

Love, HERMANA MANGUM!!!
